There are problems around maintaining fish stocks and the ocean environment. In South Africa local fishermen are deprived by a fishing system that is corrupt. Managing natural resources is as much about politics as it is about natural resources.
Each stakeholder in a fisher will blame the other. The bottom line is that we are all responsible. It is the fish that bear the brunt of our mismanagement.
In every country there are people who are prepared to do the right thing but the right thing is defeated by corruption and mismanagement – this is not unique to Africa but all over the world. It is up to all of us to make informed decisions about what we eat and don’t eat and what we do and don’t do.
The big fishing companies are a problem because of over-fishing. If fishing rights are limited to small-scale fishers it will have less of an impact on the marine environment.
