DAY 2 – FORESTS – PART TWO

The team gathers at the National Botanical Gardens at Kirstenbosch.

Plants have an amazing ability to convert sunlight, carbon dioxide, water into living energy, which is fundamental for all forms of animal life. From the tiniest of microorganisms to the largest of animals and our large human ego’s. There has yet to be any process as efficient as this process of photosynthesis. This process began millions of years ago with tiny microscopic plants. Plants have created the condition for other life forms to develop.

In a very short period of time, a lot of the natural resources here on the planet have vanished.

John goes into depth about the wild almond tree as well as trees in general. A tree like this has immense power to stabilize the atmosphere in two very important ways:

  1. Capturing carbon dioxide, that is now ever burning; industrial society has become a major issue and pollutant. There is so much carbon dioxide accumulating in the atmosphere, that these trees are doing a vital role in converting that carbon dioxide back into a living more stable form.
  2. The intricacies of the water cycle; The leaves are releasing moisture, that creates this lovely cool ambiance that we have here. And with it go all the microbial life, that is taken into the atmosphere and provide nuclei for the whole condensation process, allowing the rainfall to return back to the surface of the earth, and the surface upon which they are standing is damp from the soil cover.

John also covers: Life begets life; A garden nourishes one’s life, which the orientals have always believed; How mankind has fouled its own nest; The difference between paper dollars and solar dollars; Fertilizer; Alien species;
